A314 Vintage: Botanical and Medicinal Wisdom that Cannot Be Replicated in 2025.

 

We don’t exactly know what makes A314 Vintage tick the way it does.

Executive Summary – Fast Facts

 

• A314 Vintage was macerated in 2009 from 2005 and 2006 components.  
• Stored in cool, dark, root cellar conditions. 
• Vat matured, opened only a handful of times between 2009-present before being bottled in March 2025. 
• Fragrance: Akuto + rare botanicals and animal musks that aren’t IFRA so it can’t be made again. Ever. (More details below)
• Don’t ask the Rev # because I have no idea and I can’t decipher the complex codex used in the legacy formulation log. I literally do not know if it is Rev 17 or Rev 23 but it is narrowed down to one of those two.

 

Forbidden Ingredients

 

The rare botanicals included in the Vintage formula possibly added to the aromatherapeutic effect. The botanical component was created in 2005 under the tutelage of UK’s Chrissie Wildwood. She is a giant in the holistic aromatherapy world, author of Erotic Aromatherapy (and several others), and one of our original formulation team’s esteemed teachers. With her guidance, the original formulators developed a novel botanical extract of warming and sensual herbs that aged over several years, mellowing out over time. If it was even compliant today it would take 20 years to mature. 

 

Another forbidden set of ingredients that makes Vintage what it is are the additions of wild Himalayan Kasthuri deer musks from Tibet and Nepal. Cervid (deer, elk) pheromones are some of the most potent and long distance pheromones in the animal kingdom, just ask any hunter during open season – a trained nose can smell a trophy buck from 10-30 yards away! 

 

Unlike the North American deer, the Moschus Moschiferus musk deer produces highly revered medicinal musk in a gland near its navel called the musk pod. North American deer don’t even have this gland. The musk pod itself is a pheromone producing gland of the deer, used in nature for marking and mating. 

 

At one point they were thought to be “no-kill” musks, but that just simply wasn’t possible. Processing this pod unfortunately contributes to the demise of the deer, but it’s a potent men’s hormone medicine used in Ayurvedic practices and aromatherapy since time immemorial. 

 

Many of the compounds that make up the pod itself are possible pheromones that can’t be isolated or quantified. 

 

This was the reason why it was included in the original formula.

So… that’s not happening again. 

 

In modern times the deer are farmed and harvested for the medicinal values of the pods, but farmed Kasthuri deer just don’t have the oomph as the wild deer did. Those components aren’t even really available without overstepping some gravely unethical poaching realities, but because the formula was created in 2005, it’s grandfathered as a collector’s piece.

 

All these complex notes are nestled between the Akuto notes and bloom when applied. The deer musk is the deep base note that will linger on for days.
